What is the CSCA Exam?

The Chinese Studies Competency Assessment (CSCA) is a comprehensive entrance examination used by Chinese universities to evaluate the academic readiness of international students. Unlike HSK, which measures general Chinese language proficiency, the CSCA specifically assesses whether a student can handle university-level coursework conducted in Chinese.

The exam was introduced as part of China's effort to standardize the admission process for international students and ensure they have the language skills necessary to succeed in academic programs. It is now required by over 100 top universities, including Tsinghua University, Peking University, Fudan University, and Zhejiang University.

The CSCA score is valid for 2 years from the test date. Most universities require a minimum score of 60% to 70% for admission, though top-tier programs may set higher thresholds. Having a strong CSCA score can also improve your chances of receiving a scholarship.

Exam Structure

The CSCA consists of four sections, each testing a different language skill. The total exam duration is approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes.

1

Reading Comprehension

40 minutes · 30 questions · Academic texts, articles, instructions

2

Listening

35 minutes · 25 questions · Lectures, dialogues, announcements

3

Essay Writing

4

What Our Students Say

I was terrified of the CSCA, especially the oral interview. The teachers helped me practice until I felt confident. I scored 82% and got into my dream university. The mock exams were exactly like the real thing.

I started with HSK 4 and wasn't sure if 3 months would be enough. The structured program and weekly mocks kept me on track. Passed CSCA with 76% — more than enough for my program. Highly recommend!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the CSCA exam?
CSCA (Chinese Studies Competency Assessment) is a standardized entrance exam required by many Chinese universities for international students applying to bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs. It evaluates your Chinese language proficiency across reading, listening, writing, and speaking.
What HSK level do I need before taking CSCA?
We recommend at least HSK 4 (new standard) or HSK 5 (old standard) before attempting the CSCA. The exam requires solid reading and listening comprehension plus the ability to write 600+ character essays and hold a conversation on academic topics.
How long does CSCA preparation take?
Typically 2–4 months of focused preparation. If you already have HSK 5, you may need 6–8 weeks. For students at HSK 4 level, we recommend 3–4 months. Our intensive course covers everything you need within this timeframe.
Can I retake the CSCA if I fail?
Yes, you can retake the exam. However, retake sessions are scheduled only a few times per year, and a failed attempt may delay your enrollment by a semester. That's why we focus on helping you pass on the first try with thorough mock exams and targeted practice.
Is CSCA the same as HSK?
No. HSK is a general Chinese proficiency test, while CSCA is a university-specific entrance exam. HSK certifies your language level; CSCA evaluates whether you're ready for academic studies in Chinese. Many universities require both HSK and CSCA scores for admission.
Do you provide study materials?
Yes, all study materials are included in the course fee. You receive textbooks, practice tests from previous years, vocabulary lists, essay templates, and audio materials for listening practice. All materials are regularly updated to match the latest exam format.
What if I have a low HSK level — can I still prepare for CSCA?
If your level is below HSK 4, we recommend starting with our HSK preparation courses first. We offer a combined pathway: HSK courses to build your foundation, then CSCA preparation. This ensures you have the language skills needed to pass.
