What Is the HSK Test?
HSK (Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì / 汉语水平考试) is the most widely recognized standardized test of Chinese language proficiency for non-native speakers. Developed and administered by Hanban (the Office of Chinese Language Council International), HSK is accepted by universities, employers, and government organizations worldwide as proof of Chinese language ability.
The HSK system consists of six levels, each aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Whether you're a complete beginner aiming for HSK 1 or an advanced learner targeting HSK 6, knowing your current level is the first step toward effective study. The HSK certificate is valid for two years and is essential for university admission in China. Most bachelor programs require HSK 4 or above, while top universities and scholarship programs require HSK 5–6. HSK 1

HSK 2
CEFR A2Communicate in simple, routine tasks on familiar topics. Can describe your background, immediate environment, and matters of immediate need.
HSK 3
CEFR B1Handle most situations while traveling in China. Can produce simple connected text on familiar topics and describe experiences, events, and ambitions.
HSK 4
CEFR B2Discuss a wide range of topics with fluency. Can interact with native speakers without strain. Understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics.
HSK 5
CEFR C1Read Chinese newspapers, watch Chinese movies, and give longer speeches in Chinese. Can use language flexibly for social, academic, and professional purposes.
HSK 6
CEFR C2Comprehend virtually everything heard or read in Chinese. Can express yourself spontaneously, fluently, and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning in complex situations.
