Why Do You Need IELTS/TOEFL for China?

China has become a major destination for international students, with over 500,000 foreign students enrolled in Chinese universities. While many programs are taught in Chinese (requiring HSK), a growing number of prestigious universities offer English-taught programs (EMI) across fields like engineering, business, medicine, and computer science.

These English-taught programs require proof of English proficiency, and IELTS and TOEFL are the two most accepted tests. Your score directly affects not only your admission chances but also your eligibility for scholarships like CSC (China Scholarship Council), which often requires IELTS 6.0+ or TOEFL 80+ as a minimum.

Unlike some countries that accept informal English proficiency evidence, Chinese universities strictly enforce standardized test score requirements. Having a strong IELTS or TOEFL score is often the single most important factor in your application to an English-taught program.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need IELTS or TOEFL for studying in China?
If you're applying to an English-taught program (EMI — English as Medium of Instruction), yes. Most Chinese universities require either IELTS 6.0+ or TOEFL 80+ for admission to bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs taught in English. Some universities also accept Duolingo or PTE scores.
What's the difference between IELTS and TOEFL?
IELTS (British Council) uses a band scoring system (1–9), tests face-to-face speaking, and is generally preferred in Commonwealth countries. TOEFL (ETS, USA) uses a 0–120 scoring system, has internet-based speaking, and is more common for American-style education. Both are widely accepted in China — choose based on your comfort level and target university preferences.
How long does preparation take?
Our standard course runs 8–12 weeks with 3 lessons per week. If your starting level is B1 (Intermediate), expect 8 weeks to reach IELTS 6.0. From A2 (Pre-Intermediate), plan for 12 weeks. We also offer intensive 4-week crash courses for students with strong foundations who need a quick score boost.
Can I study both Chinese and prepare for IELTS/TOEFL at the same time?
Yes! Many of our students combine Chinese language courses with IELTS/TOEFL preparation. We help you create a balanced schedule that progresses in both areas. Some students prepare for IELTS/TOEFL first, then focus fully on Chinese after securing university admission.
What if I don't reach my target score?
We offer a score improvement guarantee. If you attend all lessons, complete all assignments, and don't reach your target score, we provide additional preparation sessions at no extra cost until you achieve it. Our track record shows 94% of students reach their target on the first attempt.
Do you help with exam registration?
Yes, we assist with exam registration, including finding the nearest test center, choosing the optimal test date aligned with your university application deadlines, and completing the registration process. We also advise on which exam (IELTS Academic vs. General, TOEFL iBT) is best for your specific situation.
