Full translation

The Book of Songs is the earliest anthology of poetry. Ancient people called it the Three Hundred Poems. The Airs of the States were mostly collected from among the people. The Airs of the Fifteen States is the collective name of that section. The Lesser Odes often describe banquets and court affairs. The Greater Odes are solemn and praise former kings. The Three Hymns were used in ancestral-temple sacrifices. The Hymns of Zhou are the oldest of the three hymn sections. The Six Principles are airs, odes, hymns, exposition, comparison, and evocation. Correct Airs are the songs of an orderly age.
