Summer programmes of 3–6 weeks are the lowest-risk way to "try" China. Tsinghua, Fudan, Peking and ZJU run summer schools every July–August: classes in the morning, excursions and cultural events in the afternoon, with Russian- and English-speaking groups. Perfect for testing whether China suits you before spending 4 years and tens of thousands of dollars.
