Chinese Calligraphy & Culture

Chinese calligraphy (书法, shūfǎ) is not merely beautiful handwriting — it is one of China's most ancient arts, inseparably connected to philosophy, poetry and meditation. On this course you will master brush technique (毛笔, máobǐ): proper grip, basic strokes (横, 竖, 撇, 捺, 点), and constructing characters from component elements. Calligraphy helps you memorise character structure and develops motor memory, which accelerates Chinese language learning overall.

Classes are led by a calligraphy master from China.

Each lesson immerses you in cultural context: from the history of writing (from oracle bones to simplified characters) to the role of calligraphy in modern China. You will learn about the five major calligraphy styles: seal script (篆书), clerical script (隶书), regular script (楷书), semi-cursive (行书) and cursive (草书). Each style reflects its era and philosophy.

The course also introduces the "Four Treasures of the Study" (文房四宝): brush, ink, inkstone and paper — the essential tools that have remained unchanged for centuries.

The course is suitable for everyone — from Chinese language students who want a deeper understanding of characters, to anyone interested in Eastern art and culture. Language level does not matter: calligraphy teaches through visual and tactile practice. The course relieves the stress of rote character memorisation and turns it into a creative process.

By the end you will create your own calligraphic artwork and gain the ability to create traditional calligraphy pieces as gifts — a valuable skill for cross-cultural communication.
