Career after graduating in China — work, post-doc and immigration

Receiving the diploma is only the halfway mark. What's next? Stay in China, move to a third country, or go home? Below is each path with real numbers.

Option 1: stay and work in China

Since 2024 China officially issues work visas to fresh graduates without the 2-year experience requirement — only for top-100 global universities. Beyond that you need 2 years of experience.

Foreigner salaries in 2025

  • IT/AI Engineer (Shanghai, Shenzhen): 25,000–60,000 ¥/mo = $3,400–8,200.
  • Marketing & PR: 18,000–45,000 ¥/mo.
  • Consulting (McKinsey, Bain): 35,000–80,000 ¥/mo + bonuses.
  • English teaching: 18,000–35,000 ¥/mo + housing.
  • Finance (Shanghai): 30,000–70,000 ¥/mo.

Where to look for jobs

  • LinkedIn (especially for top international firms).
  • Maimai — the Chinese professional network.
  • Liepin, Lagou (for IT).
  • Your university's Career Service — the most reliable channel.

Option 2: relocate to a third country

A diploma from a top Chinese university opens doors in:

  • Singapore — Employment Pass for IT, finance, medicine.
  • Hong Kong — IANG Visa for graduates of top global schools (incl. Tsinghua and Peking).
  • USA — H-1B via an employer.
  • Canada — Express Entry treats a Chinese diploma like a European one.
  • UAE — Golden Visa for IT, engineering and medicine specialists.

Option 3: go home

The most common path for CIS graduates. Your edge:

  • Knowing Chinese — a 30–60% premium in companies with Chinese capital.
  • Understanding Chinese business culture — critical for trading firms.
  • A network in China — opens doors at startups and trade companies.

Where our graduates work in Russia and CIS

  • Wildberries, Ozon (China sourcing).
  • Huawei, Xiaomi, BYD (local offices).
  • Import/export firms.
  • Teaching Chinese — rates of 1,500–3,500 ₽/hour.
