Chinese Student Visa X1 — step-by-step guide for 2026

The student visa is the last — and one of the most error-prone — steps before flying to China. A mistake here can delay your trip by weeks or even cause a refusal. This guide walks you through getting an X1 visa cleanly, on the first attempt.

X1 vs X2: which one do you need?

  • X1 — for studies longer than 180 days (bachelor, master, PhD, long-term Chinese-language courses). After arrival it converts into a Residence Permit.
  • X2 — for short-term programs (up to 180 days). Cannot be converted into a residence permit.

If your program is longer than one semester, you need an X1.

Required documents

  1. Passport — valid for at least 6 more months after entry, 2+ blank pages.
  2. V.2013 application form — completed and signed.
  3. Photo — 33×48 mm, white background, no glasses, taken within the last 6 months.
  4. Admission Notice (录取通知书) — original invitation from the university.
  5. JW201/JW202 — JW201 for CSC scholars, JW202 for self-funded students.
  6. Foreigner Physical Examination Form — medical certificate with all the right stamps.
Important: the Admission Notice and JW201/JW202 are couriered by the university. Plan 2–3 weeks for delivery.
