AI and engineering in China 2026 — programs, scholarships, jobs

China leads the world in AI publications: since 2022 it has out-published the US 1.7×. That means a master's in machine learning here puts you straight inside live research groups at Baidu, Huawei, Alibaba and ByteDance.

Which majors to look for

  • Computer Science (人工智能方向) — a generic master's with an AI track.
  • Artificial Intelligence (人工智能) — a standalone program, available since 2019.
  • Data Science and Big Data Technology — for applied analytics.
  • Intelligent Manufacturing — at the intersection of AI and Industry 4.0 (BIT, HUST, Tianjin).

Top 10 programs for international students

1. Tsinghua University — Institute for AI

Professors with PhDs from Stanford / MIT. Direct access to data from Baidu and JD.com. The English-taught MSc in AI. Type B Full scholarship — 8% of admits.

2. Peking University — School of EECS

Strong theory and computer vision. Master of Big Data Analytics in English for international students.

3. SJTU — John Hopcroft Center

Founded with the Turing Award winner. CS Master with focus on algorithms and AI.

4. Zhejiang University

Top in NLP and computer vision. AI Innovation master's.

5. Fudan University — School of Data Science

Data Science master's in English — the most CIS-friendly cohort composition.

6. HUST — School of CS

One of the largest AI faculties in China. Government contracts with Huawei.

7. USTC (Hefei)

Joint lab with Microsoft Research Asia.

8. SUSTech (Shenzhen)

Aggressive young university. Free scholarship for every international master's student for 2 years.

9. BIT (Beijing Institute of Technology)

Applied AI: robotics, autonomous systems. Strong prep for engineering roles.

10. NUDT (National University of Defense Technology)

PhD only. Hard-core math and algorithms.

What your portfolio must contain

  • 2–3 GitHub projects with proper READMEs, ideally one with a working demo.
  • Kaggle (bronze/silver) or ICPC participation.
  • Python + PyTorch/TensorFlow + at least one of: Pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn.
  • One publication (even on arXiv) — adds +20% to your odds.
VNM tip: if your bachelor's isn't in CS, get an official Coursera/Stepik ML certificate. It satisfies the "related field" requirement in 80% of cases.

The financial side

  • Tuition without scholarship: 35,000–60,000 ¥/year (~$4,800–8,200).
  • Type B Full covers tuition, dorm and 3,000 ¥/mo.
  • University scholarships (for HSK 5+) — up to 50,000 ¥/year extra.
  • TA work: 1,500–4,000 ¥/mo, fully legal.
