How much does it cost to live in China 2026?

There is no single “price for a year in China”. The claim that it is 2-3× cheaper than Europe is not supported by one comparable source and must not be treated as a promise. Start with the fee notice for the selected university, campus, program and intake.
Tuition
- Chinese-language year: 16,000–24,000 ¥/year (planning range; confirm every included item in the applicable fee notice).
- Bachelor in Chinese: 22,000–30,000 ¥/year.
- Bachelor in English: 28,000–60,000 ¥/year.
- Master: 25,000–90,000 ¥/year.
- MBA: 60,000–350,000 ¥/year (Tsinghua SEM, CKGSB).
Housing: dorm vs apartment
Dorm: the 6,000–18,000 ¥/year and 3,000–9,000 ¥ ranges are planning scenarios only. Verify room type, campus, deposit, utilities, internet, air conditioning and furniture in the current fee notice.
Apartment: the 2,000–3,500 ¥/mo Chengdu and 5,000–9,000 ¥ Shanghai ranges are not verified market guarantees. Do not promise that sharing makes rent exactly 2 times cheaper; request current listings and the full charge schedule.
Food
- Check university canteen prices for the selected campus.
- Cafés around campus: 15–40 ¥ per dish.
- Meituan / Ele.me delivery: 25–50 ¥ for a full lunch.
- Cooking at home: groceries — 800–1 500 ¥/mo.
Planning range for food: 1,500–2,500 ¥/mo; replace it with current local prices and your own expense log.
Transport
- Metro: 2–7 ¥, bus: 1–2 ¥.
- Bike-sharing (Hellobike, Didi Bike): 1,5 ¥ per ride.
- Monthly transport budget: 200–400 ¥.
Mobile, internet, entertainment
Use 39–79 ¥/mo and 500–1 000 ¥/mo only as editable scenario fields. Do not assume dorm Wi-Fi is free: confirm the tariff, connection charge and included services with the campus and provider.
All-in monthly budget (excluding tuition)
- Budget (Chengdu, Xi'an, Harbin): 2,500–3,500 ¥ ≈ $350–490.
- Standard (Beijing, Guangzhou): 4,000–5,500 ¥ ≈ $550–760.
- Comfort (Shanghai, Shenzhen): 6,000–9,000 ¥ ≈ $830–1 240.
Where you can save
- Do not promise a 1,000 ¥/mo saving without your own expense log and current price comparison.
- Read CSC coverage from the award notice; a scholarship does not automatically remove almost every cost.
- Do not budget 800–1 500 ¥/mo of assistant income without a written offer and confirmation that the work arrangement is permitted.
- Verify student discounts for parks, museums and trains with the provider before purchase.
Frequently asked questions
Can one average budget be used for every city in China?
No. City, campus, housing format, and lifestyle materially change the total. Start with a planning range, then replace tuition and housing with the figures in the official fee notice for your intake.
Is accommodation included in tuition?
Only when the offer, scholarship notice, or fee table says so. Housing, deposits, electricity, water, internet, and bedding may be charged separately.
What should be included in a first-month reserve?
Budget separately for a housing deposit, insurance, medical and immigration procedures, connectivity, airport transport, and basic household items. Request the exact list from the campus international office.
