Application timeline for September 2026 — month by month

Getting into a Chinese university is an 8–12 month marathon. The earlier you start, the higher your odds of landing a top university with a grant. Below is the month-by-month calendar.

September 2025 (12 months out)

  • Lock in the level (bachelor / master / PhD / language year).
  • Research 30+ universities and shortlist 5–7.
  • If your HSK is below 4 — sign up for a course or start self-study.
  • Planning CSC — start working on the research proposal.

October–November 2025

  • Take IELTS/TOEFL (for English-taught programs).
  • Polish your CV in English.
  • Reach out to potential PhD supervisors.
  • Request recommendation letters from your professors.

December 2025 — January 2026

  • Take the HSK exam (if required).
  • Translate and notarise your diploma, transcript and certificates.
  • Tailor a motivation letter to each university.
  • Finalise the research proposal (1,500–2,500 words).

February–April 2026 — application peak

  • Submit applications to 5–7 universities in parallel.
  • Submit a CSC application via the Chinese embassy.
  • Submit Belt & Road and university grant applications.
  • Prepare for online interviews (especially Tsinghua, Peking, Fudan).

May–July 2026

  • Receive CSC results and admission decisions.
  • Pick a university and confirm acceptance.
  • Receive the original Admission Notice and JW201/JW202.
  • Book the dormitory.

August 2026

  • Take the medical exam for the X1 visa.
  • Submit visa documents through CVASC.
  • Buy your flights (4–6 weeks out is the sweet spot).
  • Notify the university of your exact arrival date.

September 2026 — kickoff

  • Arrive 5–7 days before classes start.
  • Police registration in the first 24 hours.
  • File for the Residence Permit.
  • Open a bank account, set up Alipay and WeChat Pay.
  • Orientation week at the university.
The earlier you start, the calmer the process. Late starters in March keep missing deadlines and waiting on notarisations.
