How to pick a Chinese university in 2026 — 7 criteria and an anti-checklist

The single most common mistake an applicant makes is picking a university by QS ranking alone. The QS top 50 is prestigious, but without CSC and a strong profile your chances are slim. Here is how to pick a university you can actually get into — and enjoy.

1. 985, 211, Double First Class — what they mean

  • Project 985 (39 universities) — China's Ivy League, maximum government funding.
  • Project 211 (116 universities) — strong national schools; all 985 are inside.
  • Double First Class (140 universities) — the 2017 list, focused on specific fields.
If a university is in none of the three lists, the diploma carries less weight outside China. For CSC you need at least Double First Class.

2. English-taught programs

Not every top university teaches in English. Check the International Students page. The most reliable English tracks are:

  • Tsinghua University — School of Economics and Management.
  • Peking University — Yenching Academy.
  • Fudan University — School of International Relations.
  • Zhejiang University — International College.
  • Shanghai Jiao Tong — UM-SJTU Joint Institute.
